Your team plays a valuable role to achieve your Department’s Goals and works towards your Company’s Vision. Your team needs to know what you expect for them to succeed.

The purpose of their role and how they fit into the company’s vision should be defined at time of job postings and explained further in the interview process. The idea is to ensure you hire an individual that has the same vision as the company and the same values to work towards the vision. This will help you start off with success with each team member and the company working in alignment.

Expectations can be verbal or written. The model above can also be used to set expectations when delegating tasks or projects. This plan will be discussed as part of defining requirements.

Define the Requirements

What will success look like for them in this role? Initially you will develop the criteria for success. As the role and the person in the role grows, you will review requirements alongside the employee to get their valuable ideas and input.

As an exercise, identify one of your team members that you supervise. Reflect on their role and/or tasks, using the 5W’s and the H to ensure that you have communicated the requirements clearly.
